Celebrating Over Six Decades of a True Los Angeles Original
Los Angeles, CA — Pioneer Chicken has been named Hey LA’s Best Legacy Restaurant, following Hey LA’s viewers poll recognizing the city’s most beloved and enduring local dining spots. The honor celebrates more than sixty years of authentic flavor, community connection, and the restaurant’s special place in Los Angeles history.
A Los Angeles Classic Since 1961
Pioneer Chicken was founded in 1961 by Rick Kaufman, who opened the very first location next to the Pioneer Market in Echo Park. The name and the spirit of the restaurant were inspired by the sense of adventure and optimism that defined Los Angeles in the early 1960s. From the beginning, customers lined up for what would become Pioneer’s signature: crispy, golden fried chicken that’s light, flavorful, and cooked to perfection.
The combination of that distinctive batter, hearty sides, and friendly neighborhood service quickly turned Pioneer Chicken into a local favorite. Families would stop by after church, sports games, or long workdays, and the restaurant became woven into the rhythm of everyday Los Angeles life.

Expansion and Cultural Fame
By the mid-1970s, Pioneer Chicken had grown to more than one hundred locations across California. At its height in the late 1980s, the chain reached about 270 restaurants. The brand’s bright orange logo and cheerful interiors became a familiar sight throughout the region, symbolizing comfort, community, and local pride.
During the late 1970s and 1980s, Pioneer also became a recognizable part of pop culture. The restaurant appeared in commercials featuring Muhammad Ali and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and its chicken even made cameos in music videos and television shows, including DeBarge’s “Rhythm of the Night” and “Full House.” For many Angelenos, those moments turned Pioneer Chicken into more than a restaurant — it became a piece of the city’s cultural identity.

A Legacy That Endures
Although the number of locations eventually declined, Pioneer Chicken never disappeared from the hearts of its fans. The remaining restaurants, including the beloved Boyle Heights and Bell Gardens locations, continue to serve the same original recipes created in 1961. Every meal still reflects the same attention to quality and the same pride that built the brand in its early years.

At the Boyle Heights restaurant on 904 South Soto Street, guests can still enjoy the classic menu of fried chicken, Pioneer Strips, Pioneer Fish, and an array of traditional sides, from mashed potatoes and coleslaw to the famous biscuits that complete every meal. The atmosphere feels both nostalgic and genuine, a living reminder of Los Angeles history that continues to welcome new generations of customers.
